Why is this a big game for Manchester United?

United have one win from their first three league-phase games and were beaten 4-1 by Como in Italy on 21 October. They sit level on three points with Inter and a group of other clubs around 20th place, inside the play-off zone but close to the bottom 12, who go out.

It has been a difficult autumn at home too. United are 17th in the Premier League with seven points from nine games, so a European win would be a much-needed lift.

How are Roma doing?

Roma have one win, one draw and one defeat, which puts them 15th on four points. A win at Old Trafford would push them towards the top half of the 36-team table.

How does the Champions League league phase work?

Each club plays eight games. The top eight go straight to the round of 16, those finishing ninth to 24th go into a two-legged play-off, and the bottom 12 are eliminated. After tonight, United and Roma will have four games left.

What else is on tonight?

Aston Villa, the only English side with a perfect record, play Barcelona at 8pm. Atletico Madrid v Bayern Munich and Villarreal v Paris Saint-Germain are also at 8pm.
