Why are Santander Cycles closing?

TfL says the scheme needs a complete system upgrade. When it reopens, riders will use a new Santander Cycles app, unlock bikes by scanning a QR code on the bike, and be able to pay with Apple Pay and Google Pay.

What can’t I do during the closure?

For the five days you will not be able to hire a bike, buy access, or view your account, whether you use the app, a docking station terminal or a membership key. That includes the e-bikes.

What about my membership?

Annual Pass holders will get a free seven-day extension and Monthly Pass holders a free five-day extension, both added from 17 November.

How do I get a free ride?

Download and register on the new Santander Cycles app and use the code NEWAPP to get one free single ride, including on an e-bike. iPhone and Android users can pre-order the app from TfL’s Santander Cycles page.

How else can I get around?

Private dockless e-bike operators will keep running, and the Tube, buses and London Overground are not affected. Plan ahead if you rely on hire bikes for the commute that week.
