Barcelona v Aston Villa

Villa have been the surprise package of the league phase so far: three games, three wins and nine points, level with PSG at the top. A trip to Barcelona, eighth with six points, is their toughest test yet. A win would put Villa within touching distance of the top eight, which guarantees a place in the last 16.

Manchester United v Roma

United have only three points from three games and sit 20th, inside the play-off places but with little room for error. Roma, 15th with four points, are one place below the top half. Anything other than a home win would leave United looking nervously over their shoulder.

Fenerbahçe v Liverpool

Liverpool have a perfect record in Europe, three wins from three, but arrive in Istanbul after Sunday’s 1-0 home defeat by Arsenal in the Premier League. Fenerbahçe are 31st with two points and need a result to stay in the race for the play-offs.

RB Leipzig v Manchester City

City have six points and are tenth, just outside the automatic qualification places. They travel to Leipzig, 29th with three points, after a surprise 1-0 home defeat by Brighton on Saturday.

Slavia Prague v Arsenal

Arsenal are seventh with seven points from two wins and a draw, and go to Prague in form after Kai Havertz’s winner at Anfield sent them three points clear at the top of the Premier League. Slavia are 32nd with one point and are fighting to stay alive.

How the league phase works

All 36 teams play eight games in a single league table. The top eight go straight into the last 16. Teams finishing ninth to 24th go into a two-legged knockout play-off for the remaining places, and the bottom 12 are knocked out. After this week, each team will have four games left.
