Newcastle had slightly more of the ball, 52% to 48%, and made 13 attempts, but only two of them tested Jordan Pickford. Everton had 16 shots, six of them on target, and Newcastle goalkeeper Lukas Hornicek was kept busy. Newcastle made four substitutions between the 64th and 76th minutes but could not find a way back, and ended the game with ten men after a second yellow card in stoppage time.

What does the result mean for both teams?

Everton have now lost only two of their first nine league games. The win takes them to 13 points, one behind Brentford in sixth and two behind Liverpool in fifth.

For Newcastle it is a worrying run. They have lost three of their last four in the league, against Coventry, Aston Villa and now Everton, with only the win at Crystal Palace in between. They sit 13th on 11 points, level with three other clubs and four points above the relegation zone.
