How have Aston Villa done in the Champions League so far?

Villa have won all three of their league-phase games, most recently a 3-1 home win over Norwegian side Viking on 21 October. Only Paris Saint-Germain sit above them on goal difference, with Liverpool, Real Madrid and Real Betis also on nine points.

Barcelona have won two and lost one of their three games, leaving them eighth, the last of the automatic places for the round of 16. A win for the Spanish side would put them level with Villa on points.

Why does tonight matter?

In the 36-team league phase, the top eight go straight into the round of 16, teams ninth to 24th go into a play-off, and the bottom 12 are knocked out. Twelve points from four games would put Villa in a very strong position to finish in the top eight, with four matches still to play.

Before the weekend, Emery said his priority was the Premier League, where Villa are 10th on 12 points. Expect some changes to his line-up, but the result in Spain will still go a long way to deciding how much pressure is on the final four European games.
