My Chemical Romance want to make their first new album in 16 years next year, and Gerard Way has hinted that the band could be back on tour in 2028.
Way told the crowd at the band’s “Devil’s Night” show at the Hollywood Bowl: “So yeah, next year, we wanna go make a record.” He added: “Hopefully we’ll see you guys in 2028.”
A new record would be My Chemical Romance’s fifth studio album and their first since Danger Days: The True Lives of the Fabulous Killjoys in 2010. The band split in 2013 and reunited in 2019. Since then they have released just one new song, The Foundations of Decay, in 2022.
At the end of the North American leg of their Long Live The Black Parade tour in San Antonio last month, Way said fans “deserve another record”. He also spoke about the death of longtime collaborator Doug McKean, who worked on The Foundations of Decay, and said it had disrupted the band’s plans.
The comments come as The Black Parade enjoys a new peak. An expanded 20th anniversary reissue, released on 23 October, took the album to No. 1 on the UK Albums Chart. It peaked at No. 2 when it first came out in 2006.
To mark the anniversary, the band also released an animated short film, Prelude To The End, made with artist Lauren Tsai and featuring guest voices including Billie Eilish and Phoebe Bridgers. It opened the Hollywood Bowl show.
My Chemical Romance became the first group to play five nights in a row at the Hollywood Bowl, finishing on Halloween. At Friday’s show The Used’s Bert McCracken joined Way on stage for the first time since 2005, and the band played We Don’t Need Another Song About California live for the first time. Their world tour continues in Asia next month.
