Forget easing into the Championships. Wimbledon has barely begun, but Day One has already delivered enough drama to set the tone for the fortnight ahead. Now the spotlight turns to another blockbuster day featuring Grand Slam champions, British hopes and one of the most anticipated matches of the opening round. If yesterday proved anything, it’s that nobody can afford to take a first-round match for granted.
Defending champion Jannik Sinner discovered exactly how unforgiving Wimbledon can be, surviving an epic five-set battle against Miomir Kecmanović. After dropping both the opening set and a tense third-set tie-break, the world number one dug deep to win 4-6, 6-3, 6-7, 6-2, 6-3 and book his place in round two.
There were plenty of other headlines too. Novak Djokovic safely negotiated his opener against Wu Yibing, while Aryna Sabalenka, Coco Gauff and Naomi Osaka all made confident starts to their campaigns.
For British fans, however, it was a painful day. With Emma Raducanu and Jack Draper withdrawing before the tournament began, hopes rested elsewhere, but defeats for Cameron Norrie, Harriet Dart and several other home players made it Britain’s toughest Wimbledon opening day in more than two decades.
If Monday whetted the appetite, Tuesday serves up another packed schedule.
Centre Court gets underway at 1:30pm BST, where all eyes will be on Iga Świątek as she begins her Wimbledon campaign. She is followed by German second seed Alexander Zverev, before one of the most talked-about moments of the day as Serena Williams makes her return to Wimbledon courtesy of a wild card.
Over on No.1 Court from 1:00pm BST, fans can enjoy another superb line-up featuring Taylor Fritz, Elena Rybakina, and a fascinating clash between former Grand Slam champions Stan Wawrinka and Matteo Berrettini.
Outside the show courts, British number one Katie Boulter opens play on No.3 Court at 11:00am BST, while Alex de Minaur, Ben Shelton, Jakub Menšík and several British hopefuls are also in action throughout the day.
Perhaps that’s why Wimbledon remains so special.
The first round isn’t simply about the favourites progressing. It’s where unknown players announce themselves, wild cards seize their opportunity and seasoned champions discover just how little the rankings matter once they step onto grass.
After only one day we’ve already seen marathon matches, emotional exits and enough surprises to remind everyone why Wimbledon is unlike any other Grand Slam.
If Monday is anything to go by, Tuesday won’t be much calmer.
Wimbledon isn’t just about world-class tennis. It’s also one of the highlights of the British summer social calendar.
Whether you’re lucky enough to be watching from Centre Court, joining the famous Queue or simply enjoying the sunshine at a garden party, one essential is easy to overlook until it’s too late: a good summer hat. Hours spent outdoors quickly become uncomfortable without one, especially during a warm spell.
If you’re heading to Wimbledon or any outdoor event this summer, this stylish Wimbledon-inspired hat is a practical addition that keeps you cool while fitting perfectly with the classic Championships look.

The opening day has already reminded us that Wimbledon rarely follows the script.
The champions are through, the upsets have begun and the British crowd is searching for fresh heroes. With some of the biggest names in world tennis taking to the courts today, the Championships are only just getting started, and if the first 24 hours are any indication, this could be one of the most memorable Wimbledons in years.
