At least 19 Russian drones violated Polish airspace during the night between Tuesday and Wednesday, marking the most serious aerial intrusion since the war in Ukraine began. The drones entered Poland from the east, triggering a swift military response and diplomatic escalation.

Polish and NATO fighter jets were scrambled. Several drones were shot down. Debris was later found in multiple regions of central and eastern Poland, including one incident where wreckage landed on the grounds of a military unit in Nowe Miasto nad Pilicą.

“This Is a Confrontation Russia Has Declared”

Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk described the incident as “a large-scale provocation”, stating:

“Last night the Polish airspace was violated by a huge number of Russian drones. Those drones that posed a direct threat were shot down.”

He added during a press briefing:

“This is a confrontation that Russia has declared against the entire free world.”

Tusk also warned that Poland is now “at its closest point to open conflict since World War Two.”

The government confirmed that it had formally triggered Article 4 of the NATO Treaty, requesting emergency consultations.

Polish Defense: “The Drones Were Neutralized”

Minister of Defense Władysław Kosiniak-Kamysz said more than 10 objects entered Polish airspace and that:

“Those that constituted a risk to Poland’s security were neutralized.”

He thanked allied support, especially Dutch F-35 fighter jets operating under NATO command.

NATO and EU Back Poland

International reaction was swift. European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen called the drone intrusion:

“A reckless and unprecedented violation of Poland and Europe’s airspace by more than 10 Russian Shahed drones.”

She added:

“Europe is in a fight. A fight for our liberty and our ability to determine our destiny for ourselves.”

French President Emmanuel Macron also weighed in, saying:

“This is simply unacceptable. I call on Russia to end this reckless escalation. France stands in full solidarity with Poland.”

Russia Denies Everything

The Russian Ministry of Defence claimed the drones could not have reached Polish territory due to limited range. The Kremlin offered “technical consultations,” but Polish officials dismissed the move as a distraction from the underlying aggression.

Several of the drones are believed to have originated from Belarusian airspace, increasing concerns over Russia’s use of allied territory for hybrid operations.

Financial Markets React

The incident immediately impacted financial markets:

  • The zloty weakened against the euro and dollar.
  • Polish bond yields rose.
  • The Warsaw Stock Exchange dropped by over 2% in early trading.

Though markets have since stabilized, analysts say the situation has raised Poland’s geopolitical risk profile in the eyes of global investors.

What’s Next?

With NATO consultations underway and military readiness heightened, experts warn of more provocations to come—especially with Russian-Belarusian Zapad military exercises set to begin.

NATO military commanders described the alliance’s response as “quick and decisive.”

For now, Polish air defense remains on high alert, and the message from Warsaw is clear: the line has been crossed—and there will be consequences.
