Halloween is here — but if you’re after fun for the whole family, not nightmares, London and the surrounding area offer plenty of great choices. Here are our six top picks where kids can get in on the spooky season in a friendly, festive way.

1. Kew Gardens (Richmond)

Kew Gardens turns into a glowing Halloween world with illuminated trails, giant spiders, a “Frankenstein’s laboratory” zone and more — all designed for families.

Tickets: www.kew.org

Why it’s great: It’s magical, walk-through, outdoors (so lots of fresh air), and not too scary for younger kids.

2. London Zoo – “Boo at the Zoo”

From 25 Oct to 2 Nov, the zoo hosts “Boo at the Zoo” — pumpkin patch, painting, nocturnal animal talks and family-friendly Halloween vibes.

Tickets: www.londonzoo.org

Why pick it: If your kids love animals, this combines nature and Halloween fun in one.

3. Warner Bros. Studio Tour London – “Dark Arts”

Just outside London, this is a must for fans of wizarding worlds. From 12 Sept–9 Nov the “Dark Arts” season runs: floating pumpkins in the Great Hall, Death Eater processions, spells and more.

Tickets: www.harrypotter.com

Why it works: It’s immersive and magical — the “spooky” factor is elevated but still family-friendly, especially if kids are into Harry Potter.

4. LEGOLAND  Windsor  Resort – “Brick or Treat”

From 4 Oct–1 Nov selected dates: a Halloween event built for kids — rides, build activities, LEGO monsters, trick-or-treat stops. Tickets from ~£34.

Tickets: www.legoland.co.uk

Why it’s perfect: A theme park with Halloween flavour, for younger children especially. Less scary, more fun and colourful.

5. Kenwood House & Gardens (Hampstead Heath)

Kenwood hosts a light-trail and Halloween themed outdoor experience: spider tunnel, slime web, laser garden, fair creek of frights but not too intense.

Tickets: www.english-heritage.org.uk

Why you’ll like it: A blend of outdoors, heritage and seasonal atmosphere — a bit different to standard theme-park events.

6. Trick-or-Treat Neighborhood Walk – St John’s Wood

If you prefer low-cost fun, stroll through St John’s Wood neighbourhood (Hamilton Terrace, Loudon Rd etc) where many homes decorate, and children in costumes go trick-or-treating.

Tickets: Free! Just dress up and bring a pumpkin bucket.

Why it works: Easy, no heavy ticket cost, perfect for evening outing around your neighbourhood.

Final tips for families

  • Book ahead: Many events sell out or get busy around October half-term.

  • Age suitability: Some trails include darker effects (fog, shadows) — check if your child might prefer gentler zones.

  • Costume friendly: Many places encourage dressing up (and it adds to the fun!).

  • Transport & timing: For venues slightly outside London (Warner Bros, LEGOLAND) allow travel time.

  • Weather & comfort: October evenings can be chilly — bring warm layers, & a flashlight if outdoors.

Have fun, stay safe, and may your Halloween outing be full of treats (and minimal tricks)! 🎃
